Small Breed Dog Toilet Training
Precisely why dog lovers hold this preconceived belief that small breed puppies are more difficult to train than medium sized or large breed dogs, I will never be able to know. Housebreaking a puppy, despite its size should never be a problem.
Small dog training, is not all different from training a puppy dog of any other larger sized breed. Whereas training any puppy will have its peculiarities, according to its breed, practically all other features remain identical, and the approach to training the canine should be the same, regardless its size.
Never the less, I will make an exception here, and accept that small dog training may present issues in two arenas, (1) Aggression and (2) Puppy crate training. However, this is not because the dog is small breed, but in all case studies, because of the owner.
If a smaller breed puppy dog is aggressive and is difficult to train, or if a small breed pup cannot be bathroom trained or poses challenges in being potty trained, it is the owner who has unwittingly contributed to this dilemma. Let us analyze how and why.
Aggression.
Smallish dogs are loved because they are cute, they are like playthings. Owners get pleasure from having their puppy sit on their laps. This indulgence is where the complication gets going. The basic aggressive character of the canine, is to claim ownership over its sector, its food, even its owner; all puppies want to be the alpha dog.
It is the violent streak in the pup that provokes it to place itself on the lap of its master, above all when there are lots of persons seated in the room.
This is a blatant act of hostility. Instead of reprimanding the pup, every owner with the exception of none, would cuddle the dog, despite the fact it jumped on to their lap without being asked to, fostering the aggressive streak in the animal. Therefore the owner has seconded the pup's instinct to be the alpha dog.
Growling and getting angry at a a bigger size dog is another clear act of unwanted anger. To the owner, and even the people nearby, this is looked on as cute, simply because one dog is very small while the other is large. Most owners shower affection on the dog instead of admonishing it, when it displays this aggression towards a larger dog.
These are but examples as to why smaller breed pups are aggressive, and not because small dog training is very difficult.
Bathroom Training
Owners are inclined to haul their small puppies around where ever they are, even at home and that renders it impossible to toilet train them
It is, as if by instinct that the owners of smallish breed dogs to carry the animal to the area where the pooch should go to the bathroom and then lug it back into the house.
It is this habit of carrying the puppy to the place where is should do its business that is the root of all roadblocks. In addition, as the pup is as a general rule carried around so much it has no way of it suggesting to or notifying the owner that it has to go the toilet.
Small dog training starts off with treating the dog as any other sized dog. They have to be shown their toilet area on a leash. If owners avoid carrying their miniature breed dogs they would have no troubles in training them.
Dog crate training, is the most exciting part of pup training, and so it should be, even in Small Dog Training.
