A Volatile High School Student Manifests Quite A Few Alcohol-Related Difficulties, Gets Suspended From School, And Has To See The School Counselor

Stephen was a sixteen year old high school sophomore who was manifesting more than a few alcohol-related issues at school. Consequently, the principal told him that he had to see Miss Pender, the school psychologist, before he would be permitted to come back to school.

Later that day when Stephen went home after school, he had to explain his school discharge to his Mom and Dad. His Mom and Dad were "fairly conservative" and explained to Stephen that dropping out of school was not a viable educational plan of action. They told Stephen that failing to graduate from high school would most probably be like a lead weight around his legs that may mar his educational achievement for the remainder of his life. Moreover, Stephen's Mom and Dad were quite distraught that he was drinking in the first place and drinking with his buddies in the second.

It was evident that his Mother and Father were in total accord with Stephen's principal and explained to Stephen that he had better come to the realization that he needs to see Miss Pender, the school therapist. After his conversation with his parents, Stephen at last agreed to see Miss Pender the next school day. So Stephen phoned the school and scheduled an appointment to see Miss Pender the next morning before school.

When Stephen arrived at his scheduled appointment with Miss Pender, she instantaneously analyzed all of the alcohol-related problems Stephen had experienced and asked him if he comprehended why his recent alcohol-related activities signaled such alarm.

Quite sincerely, Stephen was not sure why the principal suggested that he see a school counselor. As he stated to Miss Pender, why should he see a professional therapist about his drinking behavior? Due to the fact that just about all of his buddies drink the same amount that he does, for all intents and purposes, drinking is no big issue. Stated more explicitly, if almost everyone is drinking, why is this such a big thing?

In short, Stephen's involvement with teenage alcohol abuse was beginning to impede his ability to function as an accountable young man. As conveyed by Miss Pender, "Just because most of your buddies drink hard liquor, beer, wine coolers, or wine does not mean that it's the best thing to do for you."

Fortunately, Miss Pender was well prepared for her scheduled meeting with Stephen. She showed him reports and research studies she had highlighted that summarized various drinking statistics and facts that targeted most people in general. Then she showed Stephen quite a bit of information that applied especially to underage drinkers.

After Miss Pender stated the aforesaid teenage alcohol and teen alcohol abuse statistics and facts, it was plain to see that what Miss Pender taught Stephen was a real surprise to him. Why? Because for the first time in his young life, someone not only made the effort to put in plain words the short term and the long term consequences of alcohol addiction and alcohol abuse, but she also took the time to verify what she was saying with alcohol addiction and alcohol abuse facts and statistics that related to everybody in general, and mainly to teens.

Indeed, it was almost as if a light went on and Stephen immediately realized why he should not be engaging in excessive and abusive drinking with or without his classmates any longer. Stephen thanked Miss Pender for her concern and for the material she presented and then accepted her reinstatement into school.
